On the occasion of Olga and Julius 50th wedding anniversary—October 1970

It was over 50 years ago when Mary (Johnson) Rud called Olga Hendrickson and asked her to go to Maple Lake on a blind date with her brother Julius Johnson. Well, she'd heard a lot of nice things about this guy, but she'd just never seen him. She accepted and was really looking forward to meeting this fellow. When they first caught sight of each other, they both had the feeling that this was the person they were going to spend the rest of their lives with. So, in the weeks following when Julius finished his chores, he'd jump in his Model T and go to court his future bride-to-be.

It was 50 years ago on October 6, 1920, that wedding Day they said their vows in Grand Forks at the parental home of Olga. The best man was Martin Nelsen and the bridesmaid was Mary (Johnson) Rud, the one who had made it all possible.

The very next day they moved to the old Lundell place and lived there for seven years. During this time they also had become members of Elim Lutheran Church. That farm is probably a place they'll never forget because there they were blessed with four healthy, happy children - Carl, Beatrice, Janet, and Mildred.

In 1927 they moved to Higdem Township where another son, Ernest, was born. During this time they became members of their present church, Kongsvinger Lutheran. This was the beginning of the depression so you can be sure the Johnson's and other families were going to have to face some hard time.

There was a time when the children were to be in a Christmas program for church. Carl needed new pants because his others had patches over patches. There was no money to buy new ones. Mom prayed for away. The day before the program, Pop, went as usual to the mailbox and found a letter which contained $5.00. It was not signed. Because of Mom's faith, Carl was able to participate in the program looking like a welldressed little boy.

In 1934 there was a crop failure and they lost 3 horses, one right after the other. It got so there wasn't even enough money to buy a cup of coffee when they went to town. Nowadays, what would Pop do without a daily cup of coffee at the cafe?

In 1937 Mom became ill with tuberculosis so she was confined in a sanitarium for a few months. But she soon was better and returned to Pop and her children.

In 1939, Dennis was born and in the 40's things began to look up.

The things above might sound pretty bad, but even through these hardships, there was a lot of love, faith, prayer, and laughter. As most of you should know this is what life and a good marriage is based on.

Pop has retired and they are now living in Alvarado. If you have ever visited their home you can still see a love that is still as strong as it was 50 years ago.

Five of their children are married now and have blessed them with 17 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Even with all these children and grandchildren, Mom still remembers every birthday.

This anniversary is probably bringing back lots of memories of what they've been through together these past 50 years and we hope that they are good memories. We know that this day will be a day they'll always remember.
