Barbara May Hopkins, 85, of Frankfort, passed away peacefully after a brief illness Sunday, September 9, 2012, at Frankfort Regional Medical Center.

Born June 5, 1927 in Prestonsburg, Ky.

Barbara attended Holton Arms School for Girls in Washington D.C., graduated from Centre College in 1949 and attended graduate school at Columbia University and the University of Kentucky where she received a Masters of Library Science. She served as State Librarian, was a member of the D.A.R. and a member of the Daughters of the King. She was an active and devoted member of the Church of the Ascension in Frankfort.

Loving sister, aunt, cousin and friend, she was preceded in death by her mother and father, Bess Salisbury May and Andrew Jackson May Jr. of Prestonsburg, Ky.

She is survived by her brother, James Andrew May (Christine Rankin), nieces, Barbara May Hurst and Jamie May Agnew (Frank Delahoussaye), and great-nieces and nephews, James Johnathan Gorman, Margaret Christine Agnew, Frank D. Agnew Jr. , Meagan Linmar Hurst, Sarah Kent Agnew and Hanton Quarles Agnew. She is also survived by many loving cousins.

Services will be held at the Church of the Ascension in Frankfort on Wednesday, September 12, 2012, at 3 p.m. with visitation beginning at 1:30.

Burial and graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 13, 2012, at the Mayo-May Cemetery in Prestonsburg, Ky.

Pallbearers will be James Johnathan Gorman, Frank D. Agnew, Clifford B. Latta III, Jackson D. Latta, Charles W. Atinay, William O. Goebel III.

Honorary pallbearers are James Andrew May, Henry Lewis Mayo and Frank D. Agnew Jr.

Rogers Funeral Home of Frankfort and Carter Funeral Home of Prestonsburg are handling the arrangements.
