Leon J. Sorensen Huntsville, Utah Leon J. Sorensen, a long-time resident of Ogden Valley, died peacefully at his home on Sept. 28, 2007, just four days short of his 93rd birthday.
Leon was born in Mt. Pleasant, UT to George Christian Sorensen and Mina Hasler on October 3, 1914.

He graduated from North Sanpete High School, Snow College and Utah State University with a degree in Forestry. He spent a year in Washington D.C. compiling the 1940 farm census; he was drafted into the military shortly thereafter.

A veteran of WW II, where he earned the rank of Major, he served in the Pacific theater as a company commander of the Army's 339th Engineer Battalion.

On Sept. 9, 1946 he married Bonnie Pallesen in Elko, NV. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan Temple on April 11, 1963.

While working for the Soil Conservation Service in Huntsville he purchased the town's general store, which together with his wife Bonnie and their family, operated for over 37 years. The phrase "If we don't have it, you don't need it" was never more appropriate than at "Leon's Market". Upon retiring at the age of 73, they did some extensive traveling but mostly enjoyed staying at home, working in the yard, and being part of the family.

He was very active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served in two bishoprics as well as many other church callings. He and his wife served as temple ordinance workers for eight years.

He was also very active in the community where he served as the town's mayor for six years and as a member of the town council for an additional six years. He was instrumental in setting up the town's pressurized water system and managed the company for over 15 years. He was also a member of the Utah Sons of the Pioneers and the American Legion.

Leon is survived by his wife of 61 years and his five children: David L. Sorensen, Saratoga, CA, Douglas J. Sorensen (Linda), Beaver, UT, Donald W. Sorensen (Margo), Ogden, UT, LuAnn Carver (Bill), Haslet, TX, and Richard L. Sorensen (Regen) of Huntsville. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Royal Sorensen (Alice), and sisters, Elaine Becker, Donna Vance, and Norma Thompson (Don). He was preceded in death by his parents and an older brother Miles Sorensen of Mount Pleasant.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 3, 2007, at the Huntsville 2nd Ward. Interment, Huntsville Cemetery, with military honors.

The family wishes to thank all of their special friends for their support, Dr. Nancy Zega and her staff, and the wonderful people at Hospice Alliance for their compassion. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to the LDS Humanitarian Fund.
