OBITUARY Warren Sheaf December 15, 1920
Carl Johnson was born in Ousby forsanding, Kristianstads Lan, Sweden, on the 28th day of January, 1847 and passed quietly away at his late home in, Oak Park township at 9:25 o'clock am, December 8, 1920, aged 78 years, 10 months and 10 days.
At 28 years of age Mr. Johnson left for the province of Blekinge, were he was united in marriage to Hana Olson. In Blekinge they resided for a period of 7 years and; while there belonged to Jemshogs formsamling.
In 1883 they left for Verums forsamling, in the province of Skane, which lies close to Mr, Johnson's home place. After having lived there for a space of two years, this his first marriage was dissolved, due to the death of his wife, Hanna. To this union were born four children, namely, Olof, Josephine, Hilda and Osian, of whom Olof alone survives and whose home is in East Grand Forks, Minn.
Deceased arrived in America during the month of April, 1890, and with the exception of short stay at Bloomington, Ill., his years in this country were spent in Sandsville and Oak Park townships. In 1895 Mr. Johnson affiliated with the Nyskoga church, located southeast of Alvarado and, consequently was along in the work of that congregation almost from its very beginning. On the 8th day of January, 1891, Mr. Johnson was united in marriage to the now surviving widow, Anna Johnson, which union was blessed with six children, two daughters, Mary and Emma, and four sons, Charley, Julius. Albin and Wiihelm, all of whom were present at the funeral service.
Only last February the Johnson family transferred their membership from the Nyskoga to the Elim church which now constitutes their spiritual home. As regards the husband and father, he was granted to remain as member of the Eiim church but a short time. However, it is well to remember that deceased had attained to a ripe age and that his life was crowned with many hard and faithful labors, wherefore rest came as a timely close to his days on earth.
Quietly did Mr. Johnson fall asleep in peaceful death and to all appearance had the blessed privilege of knowing in whom he believed, and under such circumstances one need not fear passing over death's Jordan. We have, then, the hope that he is now among the blessed forever and our sorrow is not the sorrow, of despair.
The Swedish Psalm No. 170 is said to have been a special favorite of his and the following may serve as a translation of its closing verse:
"0 Jesus, that blood, which so kindly doth speak,
Thy blood, which from Calvary did'st flow,
O, grant that for me it may never grow bleak.
In Thee I repose and implore: Have mercy on me, O my Lord!"
He was also attached to "Hemlandssangen" No. 456, of which we give here a translation of the first and last verses:
"O Savior dear, when wilt Thou summon me from this strange world to be at home with thee? I am so weary—cannot find my rest. Until with Thee in Heaven I'm ever blest. "
O, wondrous joy when I shall God behold!
‘Twill be a blessed day of peace untold.
Think, journey home from all distresses, here to be forever with my Savior dear!"
Those who remain to mourn the, departed are, besides the widow and children, 12 grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
