Rufus Hamilton was born on February 14, 1827, in Tennessee, probably in Carroll County. His parents were Robert Shaw Hamilton and Elizabeth Bethea Hamilton. Rufus came to Texas about 1835 with his parents, four brothers, and one sister. His father had fought in the Battle of New Orleans in 1814 and upon arrival in Texas served as a delegate for Red River County to Washington-on-the-Brazos where he signed the Texas Declaration of Independence in 1836. His father also served as a Brigadier General of the 1st Regiment of the Texas Mounted Volunteers during the war with Mexico and as a Sheriff of Red River County in 1858.

When he was 21 and she was 18, Rufus married Martha Ann Ballard who was herself born in Tennessee. Their wedding was held in Red River County on January 16, 1849. Martha was the daughter of Barclay Moorman Ballard and his wife Mary Gillentine Ballard.

By 1860 the couple had moved to Kaufman County, Texas, where they would remain the rest of their lives. Rufus farmed while Martha took care of the household and their children. Rufus and Martha had at least eleven children. They felt blessed in that most of their children remained in Kaufman County.

Rufus died on February 28, 1910, just after his 83rd birthday. He was buried in Rader Cemetery, Kaufman, Kaufman County, Texas, next to his wife Martha who had died in 1891 at the age of 61.

Note: The grave of Rufus's daughter Martha "Molly" Hamilton, born 1861, has not been located.
