Gertrude Lavina was the oldest daughter of William and Anna (Freedee) Avery. She wasn't given a middle name by her parents, so her aunt, Lavina (Avery) Warner, gave Gertie her name to use. She graduated from Caro High School in 1905. On July 18, 1907, she married Russell Smith Curry. They had four children together: Ethel, John, Margaret, and Vera. Gertrude passed away at the age of 37 of tuberculosis, the same disease that took both of her sisters.
