Bert's mother, Icy lee Stewart Walton died in 1916.
He was five when his mother died, after the birth of the youngest girl, Clara Mae. His father, William, tried to get neighbors to adopt all his children but Bert and his brothers hid under a bed behind some boxes when the town folk came to see if they wanted one of the Walton children. Apparently, no one wanted any of the boys, only the girls were adopted. Clara Mae by the Jones family and Bessie Lee by the Powell family.
Claude, Bert, Joe and Herman were pretty much left on their own throughout their childhood and teen years.
The boys do remember being taken to an Indian Reservation in Oklahoma where all the boys stayed for a while. Bill told them the Indians were their mother's family (Icy Lee Stewart).
John R. Walton Bill's half-brother and his wife Melissa Alberta Stewart Walton eventually took the boys in and raised them. Melissa and Icy Lee were sisters.
According to Bert's death certificate, he is buried in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, in Smith County.
PLEASE NOTE: Bert's wife Minnie is also on Find A Grave. Click on her link and you will see her memorial says she died in 1917. That is a complete error. Although I sent a correction to the owner of the memorial, he would not change it. Her actual DOD is 3 April 1917.
