Clara Mae was born in 1916 in Stamford, TX to William Henry Walton and Icy Lee Stewart Walton. Her mother died at the time of her birth. Family history says it was tuberculosis or a burst appendix.

Her father placed her for adoption with the Edd Jones and Maye Jones family .

Maye Jones believed all girls should be educated and have the social graces. Clara Mae was required to take piano lessons and became a very accomplished pianists. Clara Mae enrolled as a freshman in McMurry College, to study music. She was a member of several student clubs and, apparently, dated the son of the College president. She stayed only one semester before transferring to North Texas State in Denton where they offered a curriculum in organ music. She went back to Abilene to get her McMurry school annual and based on the personal written notes, this must have been one of the best times of her life.

She always felt an affinity to McMurry; she rarely said anything about North Texas (and kept no annuals), although she met her best personal friend there. This was Dude McCloud who was a photographer and worked for the school newspaper. She came to visit several times after Clara Mae married E. B. Herndon; always took pictures.

Clara Mae did not graduate. She married in December 1938 - much to the chagrin of Maye and Ed Jones. She always thought that they wanted her to come back to Stamford and teach school. Said that Ed resigned his position on the school board in advance of her expected return. -
