Sold at auction as a yearling for US$1 million to England's Robert Sangster, Storm Bird became the 1980 English & Irish Two-Year-Old Champion. In 1981 Sangster and his partners sold a 75% interest in Storm Bird for a reported $21 million.
Retired from racing, Storm Bird stood at Ashford Stud beginning in 1982 where he would sire 63 stakes winners including Storm Cat, Bluebird, and Summer Squall.
