The Minstrel was a chestnut Thoroughbred racehorse bred in Canada by E. P. Taylor at his Winfields Farm. He was purchased at a 1975 Keeneland yearling auction by England's Robert Sangster. On his way to being named European Horse of the Year for 1977, The Minstrel won both the English and Irish Derbys. He was retired to stud at Windfield's American division in Maryland where he was the sire of 58 stakes winners including top horses such as Opening Verse, winner of the 1991 Breeders' Cup Mile, and Palace Music who in turn sired the two-time U. S. Horse of the Year and Racing Hall of Fame inductee, Cigar.
The Minstrel spent his final two years at Overbrook Farm in Lexington, Kentucky where he is buried.
