John Parish first appears in the records of New England in Braintree, Norfolk, Massachusetts, where he married, on June 30, 1664, Hannah Jewel. She was born in Braintree in 1643, daughter of Thomas Jewel. They had a daughter born in Braintree on July 3, 1665 named Hannah. They then moved to Mendon, Worcester, Massachusetts, where John took an original proprietor’s lot of 20 acres. The "Annals of Mendon" mentions his name in several records, the earliest being 1 Dec. 1669, when he signed an agreement concerning the coming of a pastor to the church. They must have fled from Mendon to Groton, New London, Connecticut, during King Philip’s War, because he signed an agreement in Concord in December, 1677, that those signing would go to Groton in the spring to repair their habitations.

His first wife must have died around 1685, probably in Groton, because he married Mary Waddell, in Chelmsford, Middlesex, Massachusetts, on 29 December, 1685. She was the daughter of John Waddell of Chelmsford. In Groton on May 9, 1689, he was a member of the council of safety, and on that same day, he was elected representative to the General Court. Around 1692, because of more Indian unrest, he moved his family to Ipswich, Massachusetts, where they had four more children. Around 1700, John Parish and his extended family moved to Preston, New London, Connecticut. John and his wife were admitted to the church in Preston on November 15, 1704. They lived the rest of their lives in Preston. John died there in 1715.
