Sally was the only child of Jesse Temple McCauslin and his second wife, Mary Jane Bennett.

The family was living at the Carterville Settlement of Mormon pioneers, who were residing near Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie, Iowa during the years between 1847 and about 1852.

Jesse's first wife, LaCrecia "Tempey" Durham, had died at the birth of her fourth child (son, William Younger) and was buried at Carterville, near an infant daughter, Mary, who had been born and died in 1845.

Note: some reports were that Tempey died at the birth of Mary, but that has been dis-proven.

Jesse married Mary Jane two months later, who would care for Tempey's two living daughters and also infant William. She also had a daughter of her own born that December. They named her Sally.

In June of 1851, as their family set out westward toward the Great Salt Lake Valley, tragedy struck on the Mormon Trail and Mary Jane died June 25th; little Sally died the following day and they were buried together, along the North bank of the Platte River.

Jesse would carry on with his daughters, Louisa 10, Martha 9 and William Younger, who was then about two years old. They reached the Salt Lake Valley in the fall of 1851.
