Elva Lucille Layne, a long-time resident of Denton, Texas, passed away peacefully Sunday evening on August 29, 2021, just shy of her 97th birthday. Lucille was born in Newton, Kansas and later moved to Denton. She worked in the Biology Department at North Texas State University (now UNT) for several years and was a long-time active member and Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church of Denton. As an active member, she sang in the choir, led music for the First and Third Grade Sunday School classes, and taught the Senior Sunday School for many years with her late husband, Douglas K. Layne.
Lucille had a passion for music, attended music courses at UNT, played the piano, and composed several Christian hymns. She was an avid homemaker who enjoyed cooking, entertaining family and friends, and gardening. She was a long-time member of the Hoe & Hope Garden Club where she served as Historian. Lucille shared the love of travel with her husband Douglas and enjoyed beautiful scenic trips to New Zealand, Europe, Israel, the Swiss Alps, and much of the United States.
She is survived by her brother Victor Troyer, daughter Susan Todd, son Robert Boydston and wife Rosemary, son Rodney Boydston and wife Marie, grandchildren Mark Todd, Tiffany Todd, Jennifer Boydston, Nathan Boydston, and great-grandchildren Jadyn Brown, Jarrett Brown, and Lilly Anna Boydston. She was preceded in death by her first husband Robert Hershberger, son Richard Hershberger, and her late husband Douglas K. Layne to whom she was married for 29 years.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 1, 2021 at 1:00 PM at First Denton Baptist Church until2:00 PM. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 PM and interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Denton.
