Sailor on the cruiser U.S.S. Baltimore, died three days after he was severely wounded in a riot at Valparaiso, Chile on October 16th, 1891. He was a Canadian by birth. He was buried in the Protestant Cemetery at Valparaiso, and a monument was erected over his grave by the crew of the Baltimore. Washington, Feb. 20. — John W. Heck, of Jersey City, N.J., representing relatives of sailor Wm. Turnbull, of the U.S.S. Baltimore, who died of wounds received at Valparaiso, Oct. 19, has applied to the State department for indemnity. Mr. Heck states that Turnbull's father is named Capt. Robert Turnbull; that he is 90 years of age and resides at Tappan, Prince Edward Island. Other relatives reside in and about Jersey City. | The State Chronicle, 21 Feb 1892

Seaman Turnbull's first name was also given as "John" (Punxsutawney News, 4 Nov 1891) and "Richard" (St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 24 Jul 1892) in two news releases; and his last name as "Trumbull" in some early dispatches.
