Brief Sketch of One of Reade Township's Most Prominent Citizens who died August 14th.
Alexander Troxell, one of Reade township's oldest and most highly respected citizens died at his home near Roseland on August 14th. He had been enjoying his usual good health up to the time of his death. He had spent the forenoon in attending to his usual duties, ate his dinner, and shortly after took ill and died in a few minutes. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Abraham Troxell, deceased, his mother's name being Nancy Glass. He was born July 30th, 1837 on Christ Mulhollem farm, then the Troxell Homestead, and at the time of death was aged 79 years and 14 days. He had lived on the farm where he died since 1868. Besides his aged widow, Matilda Troxell, he leaves the following children: Charles E. Troxell, Ebensburg; Sarah E. Beers, Fallentimber; Emma P. Fleming, Flinton; Rebecca H. Peterson, Benj. F. Troxell, C.J. Troxell, Glasgow; Ermina Gibson, Flinton; Calvin L. Troxell, Frugality; Margaret Cornelius, Cresson; Nancy C. Thomas, Blandburg; Clarence A. Troxell, Pittsburgh: seventy-nine grandchildren and twenty-eight great-grandchildren are also living. Mr. Troxell was a veteran of the Civil War serving Company C, 184th Penn's Cal. Infantry. He was a life-long member of the United Brethren church, being the organizer of the U. B. church at Roseland fifty-nine years ago, and was an official in the church from its organization up until his death. Faithful unto the end. Wednesday afternoon funeral services were conducted by his pastor the Rev. E. F. House, assisted by the Rev. H. H. Flick, of the Glasgow Lutheran church, from the church which he had served so faithfully all his life. Interment was made in the Pleasant Hill cemetery. The funeral was largely attended showing the high esteem in which the deceased was held in the community
Alexander Troxell, a veteran of the Civil war and prominent farmer residing near Glasgow, Cambria County, died very suddenly, August 14, 1916, at 2:30 o'clock at his home. He had been out in the field picking berries during the forenoon and returned to the house at noon, ate a hearty dinner, then walked out in the garden. soon after returning to the house where he complained of not feeling well. His illness quickly assumed a curious character and in a short time he passed away. Mr. Troxell was 78 years old and had lived all his life in that vicinity. He was a member of the U.B. church and the Pleasant Hill Cemetery Association. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Matilda Troxell, their married life having extended over a period of 57 years, and these children: Charles E. of Ebensburg; Mrs. Mary Beers of Fallentimber; B. F. of Rosebud; C. J. of Glasgow; Mrs. Emma Fleming of Flinton; Mrs. Margaret Cornelius of Cresson; Mrs. Nancy Thomas of Blandburg; Calvin of Frugality; Clark of Ohio; Mrs. Minnie Fitzgerald of Flinton; and Mrs. Albert Peterson of Glasgow. He served 9 months in the Union army during the Civil war, and was one of the most prominent citizens of the community in which he lived. (Altoona Mirror, August 15, 1916)
