Mary Etta Evans was born February 2, 1848, in Courtland, Ind. When a small child she with her father and sisters located in Chariton, and later moved to a farm near Brooks, where she grew to womanhood. April 24, 1873, she was united in marriage to Gaylor N. Odell and for the most part their 50 years of married life were spent on a farm three miles northwest of Brooks. They spent two years in Clarinda, and some years ago retired from the farm to Brooks. To Mr and Mrs Odell eight children were born, of whom six survive their parents. The deceased children are Mrs Eva Palmer and one son who died in infancy. Mr Odell preceded his wife in death, having passed away on the 30th of December, 1923. The surviving children are: Dello T. Odell, of Cresco; Arthur C., of Brooks; Harry H., of Sioux City; Jesse E., of Charles City; Mrs Addie Anderson and Mrs Russell Lines, of Clarinda. When a young girl Mrs Odell united with the Church of Christ of Brooks and she remained a faithful christian to the end of life.

At the time of her demise Mrs Odell was aged 76 years, 5 months and 1 day. For some months her health was failing and the end was not unexpected.
