Joseph was the son of William and Martha "Patsy" Searcy Endicott. He was born in Henry County, Kentucky. He was the tenth of twelve children. Joseph married Elizabeth Louisa Phillips, daughter of Dr. Samuel and Sarrah A "Sally" Phillips. in 1847 in Platte County, Missouri.
Joseph and Louisa had ten childen, moving to Leavenworth County, Kansas after the first two were born.
Louisa died in 1871 leaving Joseph with a house full of children to raise. Joseph married Sarah Jane Ewell, August 1, 1872 in Howard County, Missouri. Sarah brought a daughter into their marriage and she and Joseph had two more children.
