Nicholas Starnes/Starns was a son of Joseph Starns (c.1730-1779) and his wife Katherine (d. after 1800). He served in the Revolutionary War. His family moved from southwest Virginia to Mecklenburg County (the section that later became Union Co.), North Carolina in the 1780s.

Nicholas married Sophia Kress (c.1773-aft. 1850) in Mecklenburg Co. in Dec. 1791 (Bond date 19 Dec. 1791). They had at least eight children: Robert Starnes (c.1795), Jacob Starnes (1796-1878, m. Jane Russell), Reuben Starnes (1797-?, m. Mary Hood), Katherine Starnes (1799-?, m. Tunis Hood IV), Sophia K. Starnes (c. 1804-aft. 1880, m. William Roark), Margaret Starnes (c.1806-?, m. Joshua Hadley), Joseph Lee Starnes (1809-1899, m. Elizabeth Fisher, 2nd. m. Elizabeth Hartis), and Elizabeth Starnes (c.1815-?, m. Matthias Harkey).
