Katherine Starns was the first daughter of Joseph Starns (c.1730-1779) and his wife Katherine, perhaps Carlock (d. after 1800), of Augusta (later Washington then Smyth) Co., Virginia.

Katherine married Captain William Crabtree (c.1748-1818), a long hunter and solder of the Revolution around 1777. She was probably his second wife. They lived on Beaver Creek, on the north fork of the Holston River, in Washington (now Smyth) County, Virginia. They had nine children.

The children were: Mary "Polly" Crabtree (20 Nov. 1777-15 Oct. 1858, never married), Rebecca Crabtree (1 Oct. 1778-17 Dec. 1858, m. Basil Roberts, went to Marshall Co., Indiana), Sarah Crabtree (20 Feb. 1781 d. bef. 1850, m. George Grace), James Crabtree (28 April. 1783, went to Lawrence County, Alabama, m. Martha Heyton), Margaret Crabtree (20 Sept. 1786-2 Feb. 1840, m. George Washington Hayton, went to Greene Co., Indiana), Hannah Crabtree (1 Feb. 1789-24 Sept. 1858, other source has her birth date as 18 Jan. 1790, m. Rev. Richard Roberts, a Methodist minister), Elizabeth Crabtree (20 Nov. 1791-15 Oct. 1858?, m. Robert Hayton), William Crabtree, V (31 Jan. 1794-13 Sept. 1861, Smyth Co., Va., m. Martha "Pasty" Hayden), Jane Crabtree (28 Nov. 1797-?).
