Burial Made in Calvary Cemetery
The funeral of the late Miss Ada Florence Chew, a retired Garrett school teacher, was held at the residence at Keyser and Franklin streets Wednesday afternoon, with burial in Calvary cemetery. The Rev. H. J. Jordan of the Presbyterian church officiated.
Miss Chew, who was seventy-seven years of age, died Monday morning at 6:05 o'clock. After fifty-two years' experience as a teacher, Miss Chew retired three years ago. At that time her health was good considering her age. However, she began to show the effects of age last year and since last May 9 she had been bedfast. Her death was due to senility.
Miss Chew was born at Shelby, O., March 3, 1860. She began teaching in 1880 and located in Garrett in 1893. She took a position at that time in the Garrett public schools and for forty years taught in the grades. Supt. W. S. Painter paid high tribute to her when she retired. She was the first Garrett teacher to retire on a pension.
Surviving are two brothers, Charles C. and Albert Chew of Garrett, and one sister, Mrs. Eric Dilger of Washington, D. C.
Miss Chew resided for many years with her brother, Albert, and wife. Mr. and Mrs. Dilger arrived in Garrett Sunday. Thomas Chew, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Chew, arrived from the same city Tuesday. He is a student at George Washington university.
