Joseph Starn was born on March 2, 1757 in Maryland. He was the son of Frederick Starns, Jr. and Mary Carlock Starn. He was the husband of Charlotte Bunner with whom he had several children. Joseph and Charlotte reportedly moved from Hampshire County, Virginia to Adams County, Ohio in 1814 or 1815. Joseph passed away circa 1835.

Additional information:

1.) On June 16, 1791, Joseph bought the 1/3 interest of his brother, Jacob, in two parcels of land. It consisted of 851/3 acres and 6 acres, located on Little "Caphon" River. One identifying landmark is a buffalo lick. This is probably where he and his bride settled. Their land was three mountain ridges from the Bunner farm in Berkeley Co., near Hedgesville, Virginia. It was near to Romney, Virginia and just one mountain ridge east of South Branch of the Potomac, where Wendel Brown, Charlotte's grandfather, settled in the 1740's.

2.) Joseph lived in Hampshire Co. Va. 29 1/2 years. All of Charlotte's children were born there as well as daughter Mary Cann's first child.

3.) In 1796 Joseph purchased 154 1/2 acres of land from John and Susannah Pancake adjoining John Williamson, John Starn, James Patterson, and Nicholas Baker. It was located on both sides of Stewart Run, at its mouth, on a drain of Little Caphon River (Hampshire Co. Deed Book 10:523). This apparently adjoined his previous purchase. He also added more land in 1810, 95 5/8 acres, for a total of approximately 340 acres.

4.) Moved to Adams County, Ohio around 1814-1815.

5. Joseph appears on the personal property lists with 2 horses with $80.00 and 2 cows worth $16.00 in 1833 and 3 horses worth $120.00 and 2 cows worth $16.00 in 1834. There is no personal property list for 1835 or 1836.
