Valentine Stearns/Starnes was a son of Frederick Starnes, Jr. (c.1724-1779) and his wife Mary, possibly Carlock. His paternal grandfather was Frederick Staring/Starnes/Stearns (c.1700-1775) who came to America in 1710.

Valentine was born in old Washington Co., Virginia. His family came to Kentucky with Daniel Boone, and helped built Fort Boonesborough. Valentine's father and uncle were killed by the Shawnee Indians in 1779.

Valentine died at the Battle of Blue Licks, Kentucky in 1782, in a battle in which Daniel Boone's son was also killed. Though after Cornwallis' surrender, this is considered the last battle of the Revolutionary War.
