David Starnes was a son of Frederick Starnes, Jr. (c.1724-1779) and his wife Mary, possibly Carlock/Guerlach. His father and uncle Joseph Starnes (c.1730-1779) were killed by the Indians on the Virginia frontier in what is now Kentucky. David and his mother came to North Carolina around 1783. (His uncles had bought land in this area in the 1760s, but I don't know if they ever lived here.)

David married Barbara Starns (c.1760-aft. 1822) in 1784. She may have been his cousin. David and Barbara had at least three sons, Nathaniel Starnes (c.1785-1860s, m. Susannah Bost, probably buried here), Joseph Starnes (c. 1787-1850s, m. Catherine "Kate" Thompson, probably buried here) and Valentine M. Starnes (1792-1880, m. Elizabeth Richardson, buried at Prospect Methodist Church.) Many of his descendants lived in this area.
