George was the son of Norman McDonald (born on the Atlantic Ocean about 1793) and Mary Harris (born in Pennsylvania about 1800).

On 6 Nov 1851, George McDonald married Sarah F. Martin, daughter of William Martin and Jane Michael. Even though Sarah's name is on the headstone, it's not known if she is actually buried there or not. All attempts to find her actual burial place have failed.

Children born to George and Sarah were; Emma King, Viola J. Harden, William M. McDonald, Norman McDonald, George W. McDonald, Ida McDonald, Minnie McDonald, Charlie G. McDonald, Mabel McDonald and Clara Woolley. Six children lived to be adults and married.

After George and Sarah were married, they lived in Ohio. In 1859, they had moved on to Wayne County, Illinois, where George worked as a school teacher. In 1880, they were living in Washington Township, Warren County, Iowa. After moving to Girard, Crawford County, Kansas, George became the town's deputy.
