Lloyd Ranum, 97, died on Sunday, January 3, 2010 at Highlands of Fort Thomas, KY.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, January 8, 2010 at Viking Covenant Church, Viking, MN, with Reverend Jim Robberstad officiating. Burial will be in the Viking Cemetery, Viking, MN. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Ecklund-Holmstrom Post #117 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2793.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Thursday, January 7, 2010 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN with a 7:00 P.M. Prayer Service on Thursday evening. Visitation will also be one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Lloyd Ranum was born October 15, 1912 on the family farm in Golden Valley Township, Roseau County, MN, the son of Alfred and Hulda (Johnson) Ranum. He was baptized on the farm near Wannaska, MN and confirmed at Viking. Lloyd's mother died when he was 10 years old. The family moved to Viking in 1926. Lloyd worked on area farms. He served his country by enlisting into the United States Army on June 14, 1942. His tour of duty included the Campaign's of Normandy, Northern France, Germany and Ardennes. He was awarded the European, African, Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and four Bronze Stars. He received his honorable discharge, September 19, 1945.

In 1950, Lloyd was united in marriage to Elaine Johnson. He worked construction, mostly road construction as a bull-doze operator. For 15 years, he worked as blade operator for Marshall County and also mowed ditches for the county. He retired in 1975.

Lloyd was a member of Viking Covenant Church, Viking, MN and served as Mayor and also on the Viking City Council. In August of 2007, Lloyd sold his home in Viking and moved to Cold Spring, KY to live with his daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Tom where he lived until his death.

He is survived by children: Keith (Karen) Ranum, Viking, MN and Janet (Tom) Garcia, Cold Spring, KY; 6 grandchildren: Krista (Tennis), Jennifer (Jason), and Kayla (Chris), Jared, Craig (Erin) and Micah (Kim); 8 great grandchildren; sister: Isabelle Kron, Willmar, MN; brother, Sidney Ranum, Thief River Falls, MN; sister-in-law, Violet Ranum, Plummer, MN; half sisters: Delores (Sheldon) Forland, Shawnee, MO and Margaret (Delano) Lind, Savage, MN; step sister, Marceline Grundhaus, Crookston, MN; step brothers, Oral (Barbara) Ranum, Stanley, ND and Oscar (Delores) Ranum, North Branch, MN; step-sister-in-law, Betty Ranum of Viking, MN; and many other relatives and friends.

Lloyd is preceded in death by wife, Elaine in 1994; parents; sisters, Elsie Hodik, Florence Ueland, and Alice Kezar; brothers, Johnny, Sanford, Stanley and Glenn Ranum; step brother, Maynard Ranum ; and a brother in infancy.
