Funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday, May 24, 2007 at New Hope Lutheran Church, Newfolden, MN with Pastor Ollie Urdahl officiating. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery, Newfolden, MN.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM with a 6:00 PM prayer service on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to the funeral at church.
Elsie Ranum was born February 9, 1915 in rural Wannaska, MN, the daughter of Alfred and Hulda (Johnson) Ranum. She was baptized at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Golden Valley Township, Roseau County, MN and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Viking, MN. Elsie's mother died when she was 9 years old. The children were placed with family and friends and then in the fall they would all come home to attend school. She attended Casperson School at Wannaska and Viking School, Viking, MN.
On March 4, 1933, Elsie was united in marriage to Albert Hodik and they farmed and lived in New Solum Township, south of Newfolden, MN. In 1949 they moved into Newfolden where Elsie worked as a cook at the restaurant and in 1964 she went to work at the hospital in Thief River Falls, MN. The family moved to Thief River Falls in 1969. She retired from the hospital in 1985 at the age of 70.
Elsie was a member of New Hope Lutheran Church, Newfolden, MN. She was extremely proud of her children, grandchildren and all her family. Elsie was a wonderful cook and always took great care of her family and her home. Through her years, Elsie also enjoyed quilting, embroidery and gardening.
Survived by daughters, June (Marvin) Johnson, Thief River Falls, MN, Shirley Melo, St. Paul Park, MN and Bonnie (Virgil) Nelson, Alexandria, MN; 8 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; sister, Isabel Krohn, Willmer, MN; brothers, Lloyd Ranum, Viking, MN and Sidney Ranum, Thief River Falls, MN; half sisters, Delores (Sheldon) Forland, Shawnee, MO and Margaret (Delano) Lind, Savage, MN; step sister, Marceline Grundhaus, Crookston, MN; step brothers, Oral (Barbara) Ranum, Stanley, ND and Oscar (Delores) Ranum, North Branch, MN.
Elsie is preceded in death by husband in 1978;her parents; sisters, Alice Kezar and Florence Ueland; brothers, Stanley, Knute, John, Glenn, and Sanford Ranum; and step brother, Maynard Ranum.
