Leander Fangmann was born October 11, 1913 in New Vienna, the son of Clem and Magline (Schroeder) Fangmann. He attended school in New Vienna. While growing up, Lee helped on the family farm as well as working as a hired farm hand for area farmers. On January 16, 1943, Lee was united in marriage to Agatha "Aggie" Ricken at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Worthington. The couple settled in the Greeley area where Lee worked as a hired farm hand. They moved to Dundee where they farmed for 38 years, retiring in 1980. They moved to Lincolnwood Assisted Living in Edgewood in August 2006 and later to the Edgewood Convalescent Home. He died at the Convalescent Home on Monday, February 9, 2009, following a short illness.

Lee was a member of the St. Mary Catholic Church in Manchester. He enjoyed woodworking, helping his son at his ag shop in New Vienna, and helping area farmers.
