Lena Virginia Canady Johnson, 93, of Roanoke, passed away on Sunday, November 19, 2006. She was born on June 26, 1913 to the late Robert Edward and Rose Bell Canady and was also preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, James Donald Johnson; her daughter, Doris Marie Johnson; and her son-in-law, Keith Blair Garland. She is survived by her daughter, Susan J. Garland; her grandchildren, S. Renee Grubb, Martin Chandler Routt, David Gregory Routt and his wife, Linda, and K. Blair Garland, Jr. and his wife, Anita; as well as by great-grandchildren, Joshua Kayne Grubb, Sarah Nicole Grubb, and Parker Keith Garland. Lena is also survived by her dear friend and companion, W.J. Blane, and her many nieces and nephews who she loved. She was an active member at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church. She was previously employed by Smartwear Irving Sacks and also worked later at S.H. Heironimus. Her greatest gift was loving others, which never went unnoticed by those who met her. Lena received the most pleasure from taking care of people, and especially enjoyed cooking for those she loved. She volunteered at the Clothes Closet, Red Cross, and Lewis-Gale Medical Center. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 22, 2006 at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel with the Rev. Msgr. Joseph Lehman officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.
