William was the son of Thomas and Rhoda McAdoo Flippin. He married Mary "Polly" Johnson on December 10, 1797 in Warren Co. Kentucky. Their children were Thomas Jefferson, Nancy, and Absalom. William served in the Cornstalk Militia 1792-1811, Barren Co. Regt. Lieutenant 45th Regt. 10th Brig., 1st Div. DOC May 20, 1800. He was a soldier in the War of 1812, Co F. Capt. Hugh Brown's Co. 1st Regt. (Caldwell's) Mounted Kentucky Vol. Militia. He was promoted Oct 5, 1812 from Corpl. to Sergt.
