Zachary Carlson

Zachary Carlson passed away Tuesday, December 4th at the Veterans Hospital after a prolonged illness at the age of 71 years, 11 months and 4 days.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, December 6th, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in St. Paul. The service was conducted by Rev. Harry Rappath and interment followed in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Pall bearers were Virgil Erickson, George Manderud, Floyd Kleven, Joe Kostner, Lloyd Yoraway and Vernon Holmstrom.

Mr. Zachary Carlson was born in Stephen, Minnesota January 15th, 1891, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Carlson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Mamrelund Church and attended the rural school.

After finishing school, he went to work on neighboring farms until he was inducted into the military service in World War I. He was honorably discharged December 31st, 1918 and afterwards, he went back to work as a farm hand.

He met and married Hilma Marie Holmstrom. [on 7/16/1919]

Six children were born to them of whom three preceded him in death. They were Floyd, Lorraine, Mrs. Walden Eilertson, and an infant who died at birth.

Mr. Carlson is survived by his wife, Hilma; a daughter, Bernice; two sons, Merrill and Clifford; fourteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren, all of St. Paul. Also surviving him are three brothers, Otto, Alfred and Oscar Carlson, all of Strandquist.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers: Carl, Peter, Olaf and Emil; and three sisters: Annie, Mrs. Gust Onger, Lizzie and Elnore.

The Carlsons made their home in Karlstad for many years and during that time, Zachary was employed with the Soo Line Railway. He retired a few years ago when his health began to fail and since that time, he and his wife made their home with their daughter, Mrs. Bolin.

The many friends of the Carlson family in this community extend to them sincere sympathy.
