Otto Carlson, Strandquist Area Pioneer, Died Saturday
Otto S. Carlson, life-long resident of the Strandquist area, passed away at the Karlstad Memorial Hospital Saturday morning, September 27th at the age of 83 years, 7 months and one day. He had been in failing health for the past three years.
Otto Sven Carlson, the son of the late Carl and Anna Carlson, was born on February 26, 1897, in Lincoln Township of Marshall County near Strandquist, MN. He attended school and grew to manhood in the Strandquist community.
On April 5, 1927, Otto was united in marriage to Hilma M. Blackberg at Warren. The couple lived and farmed in Wright Township of Marshall County near Strandquist. Since April of this year, they have made their home in Karlstad. Otto was a member of the Karlstad Gospel Tabernacle for many years and served on the church board as well.
He is survived by his wife, Hilma; one son: E., of Strandquist; two grandchildren: R. and L., both of Strandquist; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 10 brothers and 3 sisters.
Funeral services for Otto S. Carlson were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 30 at the Karlstad Gospel Tabernacle with Pastor Kenneth Brown and Rev. John A. Riveness officiating.
Interment was in the Mission Cemetery near Strandquist, with the Collins Funeral Home of Karlstad in charge of funeral arrangements.
Honorary bearers were: G. Johnson, E. Blazejewski, A. Strandquist, A. Grochowski, D. Haugen and H. Peterson. Casketbearers were: D., R., and D. Carlson, D. Sjostrand, D. Thun and R. Blazejewski.
Mrs. Wayne Jacobson, Mrs. Phillip Boen and Mrs. Douglas Thun sang "Does Jesus Care?" and "Face to Face," and Ingolf Ingebrigtsen, Mrs. Chet Haire and Pastor Brown sang "Under His Wings." Mrs. Wendell Jorgenson served as pianist at the services.

Otto & Hilma Carlson's grave is located behind a tree in the cemetery. It is assumed their adopted baby, Ione Janet Hamberg Carlson, who died age age 3 from falling into scalding water, is in an unmarked grave close to them. (2011)
