Oscar Carlson Dies Of Injuries

Oscar Carlson, 77, Strandquist, passed away Thursday evening, January 13th at St. Luke's Hospital in Fargo. He had been a patient there since December 27th, the day he was involved in a pickup-truck accident just south of Karlstad on Highway 59. Oscar had been the driver of the pickup when it collided head-on with a hay truck. He reportedly had shown some improvement about a week ago, but suddenly took a turn for the worse and never recovered from the injuries.

Oscar Leander Carlson, the son of the late Carl and Anna Carlson, was born on December 20, 1899 in Lincoln Township of Marshall County, near Strandquist. He attended school and grew to manhood in the Strandquist community, and was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith there.

On June 29, 1936, Oscar was united in marriage to Janet Onger at Strandquist. Following their marriage, the couple made their home in Lincoln Township, near Strandquist.

Oscar was employed as custodian and as a school bus driver for the Strandquist Public School District for over 20 years, and served on the Strandquist City Council for several years as well. Mrs. Carlson passed away in November of 1960, and Oscar has continued to make his home at Strandquist, spending the winter months with his son, Donald, and his family in Karlstad.

He is survived by four sons: M., D., R., and G., 10 grandchildren; one brother, Otto, Strandquist, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, nine brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services for Oscar L. Carlson were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, January 17 at the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Strandquist with Pastor John F. Hagberg officiating.

Interment was in the Mission Cemetery at Strandquist, with Collins Funeral Home of Karlstad in charge of arrangements.

Honorary bearers were: C. Johnson, E. Henrickson, L. Renstrom, A. Rud, T. Blackberg, C. Krantz, and P. Blazejewski. Casket bearers were: D. Thun, E. Hougard, J. Stormo, W. Jacobson, W. Onger and D. Votava.

Mrs. Phillip Boen and Mrs. Douglas Thun sang "The Beautiful Life" and "Back of the Clouds," and were accompanied by organist: Mrs. Terry Johnson.
